With A Vision For The Future, Vision Industries Focuses On Hybrid Vehicles

Editor's Note: This is the profile you've been waiting for. We told you back in December that we had a pretty intriguing new story to bring to your attention in early 2010. Vision Industries Corp. (OTCBB: VIIC) has everything we look for; a great technology in a growing market, a product on hand getting rave reviews, a potentially huge customer testing it and the endorsement of Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger. We strongly encourage you to take ten minutes and survey this profile and the company's impressive news released this morning.

-------

Dear Reader,

America is a nation of car lovers. From the time that Ford (NYSE: F) made the Model T widely available and affordable to the masses Americans have had a passion for traveling the open road. While auto transportation is the most frequently used form of getting to work, going to the grocery store and performing other perfunctory tasks, gas prices aren't as cheap as they used to be. When crude oil surged to its 2008 peak close to $150 barrel, gas prices reached $4 a gallon in some states and those lofty prices at the pump created quite a buzz about hybrid cars.

By now, you probably know someone that has a Prius made by Toyota Motor (NYSE: TM)  or similar eco-friendly vehicle made by Honda Motor (NYSE: HM). Even American auto giants like Ford and General Motors are getting into the hybrid vehicle party. One of the unique things about the hybrid vehicle industry is that the barriers to market for smaller vehicle producers aren't as cumbersome as they are for getting into the manufacture of traditional vehicles. That's just one reason to keep an eye on smaller hybrid vehicle makers like Vision Industries (OTCBB: VIIC).

California-based Vision Industries makes hybrid cars fueled by hydrogen cells and plug-in fueling systems. Just a few years ago, those type of technologies were scoffed at by the masses as either too far flung or too “green.” Now that drivers have gotten an unfortunate taste of high oil prices, green cars have an appeal that many thought would never be seen. And companies like Vision who built their businesses as the market came to them may well be positioned to reap the rewards.

While investors should understand that we're still a long way from seeing hybrid cars surpass their traditional fuel counterparts, Vision Industries has some diversification that many of its rivals would envy. Earlier this year, the company announced that package delivery giant FedEx (NYSE: FDX) is testing a truck produced by Vision Industries. Major transportation firms like FedEx frequently see their profit margins held hostage to fuel prices, so it's not unreasonable to expect they would have an interest in hybrid vehicles.

That opens up a new, potentially enormous market for Vision Industries beyond retail customers. No matter what becomes of the FedEx test, it is obvious that the green movement continues to gain steam and that is a rising tide that could lift Vision Industries.

Consistent with our mantra of New Ideas for a New Stock Market is Vision's success thus far. Not only is the company way down the road in the hybrid market, it's success appears to be catalytic and coming more frequently now. This all leads to our enthusiasm and why we see it today as our top 'green' stock pick for the first quarter of 2010.

LOS ANGELES---Vision Industries Corp. (OTCBB:VIIC), producers of the zero emission, plug-in electric/hydrogen fuel cell hybrid, Tyrano™ semi truck, are pleased to announce that Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger introduced the Tyrano™ to the people of California, at the East Steps of the State Capitol building in Sacramento, the morning of Oct. 20, 2009.

Vision Industries Zero Emission Tyrano truck is initially designed to replace diesel and LNG short haul trucks in California. There are currently more than 100,000 short haul trucks in California and more than 1 million nationwide. Traditionally, short haul trucking is done by trucks that are on the later part of their life cycle, meaning less efficient and more polluting trucks. Also, short-haul trucking predominantly occurs in populated urban areas, affecting the health and quality of life of millions of California residents.

"This truck produces zero greenhouse gas emissions and is proof you can protect the environment and the economy at the same time. This is exactly the kind of technology we need to keep California on a path toward a greener future," said Governor Schwarzenegger.

Secretary for Environmental Protection Linda Adams quoted, "This product is the direct result and proof of California's Environmental Policies."

Vision CEO Martin Schuermann stated that "these trucks are 30% to 40% cheaper to operate than diesel trucks. We expect a strong market demand once these trucks are in the hands of California truckers."

Hydrogen Power

About Hydrogen as a fuel: Hydrogen is the answer to our long-term clean energy demands. When produced with renewable resources, the resulting Green hydrogen is truly environmentally harmless and sustainable. Hydrogen is carbon free and is naturally the most abundant solution to our energy crisis. A hydrogen fuel cell converts 1 kg of hydrogen into approximately 17KW of electricity and all hydrogen fuel cell vehicles are electric powered.

So where do you get hydrogen for your car?

This is by far the most difficult obstacle to overcome for hydrogen-powered vehicles. There are currently 41 hydrogen refueling stations in California, with many more in the planning stages and under construction. Presently the alternative fuel industry is experiencing a catch 22 with regard to the development of hydrogen-powered vehicles and the corresponding infrastructure to supply fuel. Vision is diligently working to dissolve the catch 22 by providing both the vehicles and their fueling systems for selected markets in southern California.

Battery vs. Hydrogen: Hydrogen as an energy storage medium is the most efficient battery on a pound for pound basis. The Cheetah Hydrogen drive system, containing 4.8 Kg of hydrogen, produces a usable 94KW of electricity and weighs approximately 410 lbs or 4.4 lbs per KW. The Tesla's 53KW battery pack weighs 992 lbs and releases a usable 45KW or 18.7 lbs per KW. To replace the Cheetah's 410 lb hydrogen drive system with batteries, the replacement battery pack would have to weigh 1,750 pounds! The weight savings translate into better performance and greater range.

We are working with regional, state & local officials as well as general industry participants in order to manifest our mission in a uniform manner. Vision Industries is bringing the zero emissions, renewable, alternative energy hydrogen revolution to market and making it available to all!

Hydrogen Safety

Hydrogen has many safe properties:

    * Non-toxic
    * Burns rapidly
    * Emits one-tenth the radiant heat of a hydrocarbon fire
    * Produces no smoke or emissions
    * Dissipates quickly in open spaces
    * 14.4 times lighter than air- rises at 40MPH

Producing clean and green hydrogen fuel is a simple process.

   1. With wind energy (100% green electrical power) you apply 55KW of electricity to 2.5 gallons
of water to produce 1 KG of Hydrogen
   2. Hydrogen gas is compressed to 5,000 or 10,000 psi for fueling.
   3. Hydrogen is combined with oxygen in a fuel cell to produce electricity and zero emission water vapor.

Fuel Cells

The exploitation of hydrogen as an energy carrier is yielding many exciting opportunities. Hydrogen fuel research has progressed rapidly in recent years and our society is beginning to accept the possibility of using hydrogen to generate electricity, which can be stored for later use.

In this way, innovative fuel cell technology is also progressing and it will soon be possible to run portable electronic devices as well as entire houses on hydrogen-generated energy.

Hydrogen fuel cells use gaseous hydrogen to generate energy or electricity. They operate in a similar manner to standard batteries, which utilize reverse electrolysis. Fuel cells work differently than combustion engines because the energy that they create powers electric motors.

Gasoline's Carbon Footprint

One gallon of conventional gasoline weighs approximately 6.25 pounds

Octane contains 8 carbon atoms (hence the oct- prefix) and 18 hydrogen atoms. Carbon has a molecular weight of 12 and hydrogen has a molecular weight of 1, so octane has a total molecular weight of 114 (8 x 12 + 18 x 1). Oxygen has a molecular weight of 16, so CO2 has a total molecular weight of 44 (12 + 16 + 16). When burned in an engine, every molecule of octane makes eight molecules of CO2, with a total molecular weight of 352 (44 x 8). 6.25 pounds x (352 / 114) = 19.3 pounds of CO2.

An acre of native forest grows at slightly less than 1 ton/ac/yr. An acre of native forest produces a maximum of 2,000 lbs of wood per year. 1 pound of wood is approximately 52% carbon.  To produce 1 lb of wood a tree would take in approximately 1.5 pounds of CO2, absorbing the 1/2 pound of Carbon and releasing the other 1 pound of Oxygen to the air. An acre of native forest absorbs a maximum of 3,000 pounds of CO2 per year.

carbon-footprint

To absorb the CO2 emitted by burning 1 gallon of gasoline (19.3 pounds of CO2), 12.87 pounds of wood need to be grown.

An acre of native forest has to grow for 2.35 days (56.36 hours) to absorb the CO2 emitted from the burning of 1 gallon of gasoline.

Urban Trees (individual):

A medium growth coniferous tree, planted in an urban setting and allowed to grow for 10 years, sequesters 23.2 lbs of carbon or 69.6 lbs of CO2. This estimate is based on the following assumptions: the medium growth coniferous trees are raised in a nursery until they become 1-inch in diameter at 4.5 feet above the ground (the size of tree purchased in a 15-gallon container). The nursery-grown trees are planted in a suburban/urban setting; the trees are not densely planted. The calculation takes into account "survival factors" developed by U.S. DOE (1998). For example, after 5 years, the probability of survival is 68 percent; after 10 years, the probability declines to 59 percent. For each year, the sequestration rate (in lb per tree) is multiplied by the survival factor to yield a probability-weighted sequestration rate. These values are summed for the 10-year period, beginning from the time of planting, to derive the estimate of 23.2 lbs of carbon per tree.

From planting, one urban tree would have to grow for 8.32 years to absorb the amount of CO2 emitted from the burning of 1 gallon of gasoline. (19.3/23.2 = .831896 X 10 years)
